A Killer Musical
American Psycho won’t be the first Broadway musi- cal about a serial killer. There’s Sweeney Todd, of course, and, more recently, A Gentleman’s Guide
to Love and Murder. But it will be the first based on a book
by Bret Easton Ellis, scored by Duncan Sheik and starring
Benjamin Walker, the hero of another murderous musical:
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.
The show follows the plot of Ellis’ 1991 novel and the
2000 film based on it: Patrick Bateman is a 1980s investment banker who has it all—the looks to get any girl, the
money to buy the most expensive designer clothes and
the social status to waltz into the hottest clubs and restaurants. But that’s just on the surface. In private, Patrick
indulges in what he aptly describes in one number called
“Killing Spree,” a “nightly bloodlust.”
The London Times gave the musical four stars, and The
Guardian said it leaves audiences “dangerously entertained.”

the next you’re out.
unless you’re isaac mizrahi.
for almost three decades, from his
first haute couture show in 1987 to his
live show on QVc today, mizrahi has
cat-walked a balance bet ween art, high

starting march 18, the jewish
museum on the upper east side celebrates his creativity, acumen and unconventional path with “isaac mizrahi:
an unruly history,” the first museum
exhibition to focus on mizrahi.
“isaac’s impact on new york and on
the world of fashion beginning in the
late ’80s is a story that has yet to be
documented,” says exhibition curator
chee pearlman. “this is the first exhibition and publication devoted to his
talents and influence.”
the exhibit looks at mizrahi’s work, which references issues of race, reli-
gion, class and politics. on display are about 50 looks: iconic designs from the
isaac mizrahi new york clothing label, the “semi-couture” collections, and his
trailblazing line for target. Videos display runway shows; the award-winning
documentary Unzipped; the television program The Isaac Mizrahi Show; scenes
from his cabaret, LES MIZrahi, and film and television cameos (including
appearances on Project Runway); and IsaacMizrahiLive!, his current show.
“isaac never marched to the lockstep conventions of the fashion industry,”
says pearlman. “this exhibition reveals the multifaceted, polymath quality of
his creative spirit.” march 18–aug. 7. 212-423-3200, thejewishmuseum.org
