CITY

Washington, D.C.
Through
the Lens
Exposure to photographers
from around the globe
Calling all shutterbugs! FotoDC founder and
executive director Theodore Adamstein talks
animatedly about the many exciting things
happening with his organization, including its
expanded, year-round presence in the nation’s
capital. This November, however, things
really come into focus with the fifth annual
Foto WeekDC, a citywide celebration of pho-
tography, Nov. 9–18.
Exhibits, lectures, receptions and partner
events showcase beautiful, poignant and
sometimes jarring works taken by amateurs
and professionals in genres from photojour-
nalism to commercial photography. Events
(some are free) take over spaces like museums,
galleries, the
National Geographic
headquarters
For additional event, attraction,
restaurant and hotel information,
go to arrivecityguides.com
and Chinatown’s Goethe-Institut. Some of
last year’s exhibitions included “Through the
Lens of DC Youth,” “Beyond Witness: New
Approaches to Crisis Photography” and “2011
Foto WeekDC Cherry Blossom Festival Con-
test Winners.”
New educational programs now draw even
more photo fanatics from near and far; work-
shops and portfolio reviews allow participants
to receive feedback from expert curators.
Adamstein explains how the event not only
provides countless opportunities to view stun-
ning examples of art but also gives talents a
platform to showcase their works and poten-
tially get discovered.
