PENNSYLVANIA
Frida at 100: A touring
exhibit devoted to the art of
Mexican painter Frida Kahlo
(1907-54) is on view at the
Philadelphia Museum of
Art. Celebrating the 100th
anniversary of Kahlo’s birth,
the exhibit boasts 50 paintings from the beginning of
her career in 1926 to her
death, in the first major presentation of her work in the
United States in nearly 15
years. Painted in vivid colors
and rendered in great detail,
her figurative and fantastical paintings are filled with
complex symbolism. In her
remarkably varied, often
iconic, self-portraits, Kahlo
continually reinvented
herself. The exhibit also
includes a selection of photographs of Kahlo and her
husband, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, by Gisele
Freund, Tina Modotti and
Nickolas Muray. Through
May 18. philamuseum.org.
