DIVINE PROVIDENCE
Providence, R.I., has a thriving music scene that
runs the gamut from huge stadium concerts to
small clubs with big names attached. Veterans
Memorial Auditorium, home to the Rhode
Island Philharmonic and site of the occasional
visit from ABBA, has long been acclaimed for
its “unique combination of scale and intimacy,
superb acoustics, excellent sightlines, grand
proscenium stage and beautiful interior.”
At the University of Rhode Island, just out-
side the city limits, the Fine Arts Center Con-
cert Hall was built especially for its acoustics
and has been home to the Kingston Chamber
Music Festival for two decades.

GREAT RECITATIONS
Yale University is New Haven’s largest source
of great art and cultural programs, and Morse
Recital Hall, on campus in Sprague Memorial
Hall, is a fitting stage for the impressive musicians who entertain here. Benny Goodman
was a regular and earned an honorary degree
from this famous institution, and the archives
of pianist Vladimir Horowitz are housed here.
A decade ago, the acoustics and decor were
spruced up to accommodate the likes of the
Yale Philharmonic.

BIG APPLE MUSIC
As you would expect of New York, there’s no
shortage of places to enjoy a fine musical per-
formance. Lincoln Center
is home to the venerable
Metropolitan Opera and is
a very special place to enjoy
opera or a concert. But Fred
Plotkin, author of Classical
Music 101: A Complete Guide to
Learning and Loving Classical
Music (Hyperion), suggests
visiting Merkin Concert Hall,
located one block north.
The long-running programs
“Tomorrow’s Stars Today,”
“Contemporary Concepts”
and “New Sounds Live” have
debuted world premières and
launched careers. Plotkin also
recommends Miller Theatre
at Columbia University, an
up-and-coming space geared
toward new music and adven-
turous performances. And
he enjoys “a very full season
of music” at the Metropolitan
