Last summer, I made my first trip
to Saratoga National Historical Park,
about 15 miles southeast of town, to
take in the rolling farms and woodlands
where, back in 1777, the struggling American revolution first tasted possible victory. Here is where Continental forces
defeated Burgoyne’s formidable British
army during the two decisive Battles of
Saratoga. Historians call it the turning
point in the war for independence.
My wife, Kimberly, 8-year-old daughter, Grace, and I drove the nine-mile loop
that snakes over hill and dale and offers
stunning views of the nearby mountains
and the Hudson River. Along the way we
stopped at 10 markers that describe the
historical action and tuned in to the corresponding broadcast on the car’s radio.
