KEVIN BACON, actor and musician: “Philly
is a pretty eclectic town for all kinds of music.
When I was growing up my older brothers and
sisters were bringing home The Beatles, Led
Zeppelin and Hendrix, and by the time I was a
teenager I was mostly listening to the soul radio
stations in Philly. There was an influential DJ
named Jerry Blavat who’d play the Gamble &
Huff sound, Motown, the Miracles and the Four
Tops ... very soulful music. Going to his dances
and listening to him on the radio was a really
big part of growing up in Philly.”
LISA SCOTTOLINE,
author: “We’re all about
emotion here. It’s a city
where people really
love/hate each other—or
the Eagles, Sixers and
Flyers.”
TERRY GROSS, radio
show host: “Around Independence Mall, you can
walk from one park to
another. ... It’s easy to live
in Philadelphia and feel
like you’re living in a little
village.”
