Atlantic City Boardwalk. Spanning 5 miles, the boardwalk was the fifth and final
version completed by the Phoenix Bridge Co. in 1896. That same year, Atlantic City
passed an ordinance making “Boardwalk” an o;cial street so it would be spelled
with a capital “B” to demonstrate its dominance on the Jersey Shore.
The Stone Pony. Bruce Springsteen still shows
up and plays here from time to time. The club is
as legendary as the rock star it most famously
launched into the celebrity stratosphere.
The Wonder Bar. Another Asbury Park classic. The Boss shows up here, too, to
play unscheduled sets. The clown face on the wall, known as “Tillie,” once graced
the old Palace Amusements and became
Asbury Park’s uno;cial symbol, helped to
enduring fame by Springsteen.

Marilyn Monroe in
Miss America Pageant. On Sept. 15, the
pageant returns to Atlantic City after a
seven-year decampment to Las Vegas. On
Sept. 2, 1952, Marilyn Monroe was in town
to promote her movie Monkey Business,
when the pageant’s grand marshal fell ill.
A good sport, Monroe gamely filled in and
performed his duties.
