1 / SAULT NEW ENGLAND
Philip Saul is a personification of modern New
England. Described as a fashion icon among
Bostonians, the retailer regularly dons button-down shirts with rolled-up sleeves and accents
them with on-trend wrist accessories and a
beard that can be spotted from100 paces.
Since 2011, Saul has shared his style—think of
it as The Preppy Handbook, Brooklyn edition—
with his adopted hometown, and he opened
this northern outpost a year ago. As one of the
only men’s boutiques in Portsmouth, Sault New
England offers a wide selection of merchandise,
from wardrobe staples to unique housewares.

One if by Land
Four months before Paul Revere undertook the midnight ride that
famously prompted America’s war for independence, the patriotic
silversmith had ridden from Boston to Portsmouth, New Hampshire,
to warn that British soldiers were preparing to secure the munitions
in its harbor fort. Scholars point to the ensuing series of events as
the real start of the American Revolution. Today, visitors of a gentler stripe arrive in Portsmouth by train and car to soak up the city’s
nuanced history, coastal climate and quintessential New England
architecture. Moving outward from the centrally located Market
Square, shopping Portsmouth’s independent retailers can get
you in touch with all of the city’s charms. —DAVID SOKOL
