Vital Organs
Philadelphia is home to not
one but two of the world’s
largest (pipe) organs
With nearly 7,000 pipes,
more than 100 stops
and a weight of 32 tons,
the 3-year-old Fred J.
Cooper Memorial Organ
at Broad Street’s Kim-
mel Center stands as
the largest concert hall
organ in the country
( kimmelcenter.org). But if
you think that’s big, just
walk six blocks to Macy’s
department store on
Market Street, where the
Wanamaker Organ, built
in 1904, looms large with
its nearly 30,000 pipes and
almost 300 tons, making
it the largest working pipe organ in the world
( wanamakerorgan.com).
Fortunately, summer brings opportunities to see both organs in action. The
