AND BEYOND
“With all its
eccentricities
and its
revolving cast
of political
characters,
we just felt
Philadelphia
was ripe for
satire.”

Writers Ed Furman and T.J. Shano; came
o Philadelphia last spring for a five-day crash
course on the city. Meeting everyone from
politicians to performers, visiting everywhere
from historic sites to watering holes, the pair left
with ample fodder for spoofing.
“We tried not to coach them too much,”
eja says and laughs, “but they really picked
up on people’s sense of prideful disdain about
their city.” Since then, they’ve been scribbling
away on what promises to be an unforgettable
combination of Philly-centric songs, sketches
and improv comedy with ample opportunity for
audience participation.
So who and what can we expect to see in
;e City of Nutterly Love: Funny As Bell!”?
;e Philadelphia ;eatre Company says the
show will take on “everyone from Mummers
to [Mayor Michael] Nutter, from Betsy Ross to
[Eagles coach] Andy Reid, from the Liberty Bell to
libations at the Bishop’s Collar.”
“Nothing is o;-limits for us,” says Deja, who
wants the show to be funny but also go beyond
the easy jokes. “We’ll try to look at what makes
up the core of Philadelphia.”
;ink of it as a love letter from one second city
o another ... with lots of laughs.
